Why are we giving such a deal to Blue Light Card holders?

Mouse Plague, Fire, Floods, Covid

During the past years and in particular 2018 to 2023 we (Byron Bay) have had to deal with firstly a mouse plague and fortunately they mostly didn’t get across the Blue Mountains, subsequently nor did the people living there who make up a large part of the tourists who visit Byron Bay each year.

Secondly we had fires to deal with and while Byron didn’t burn significantly there was certainly plenty of smoke and minor out breaks to deal with then thirdly of course the virus arrived followed by more fires and subsequent border closures and then more virus and more border closures.

I’ve actually lost count of how many times the borders opened and then closed and if that wasn’t enough we were then hit with floods consequently causing many parts of Byron Bay to go under, not to the extent of other towns in the Northern Rivers like Lismore, Mullumbimby, Ballina to name a few and then a few weeks later of course there were more floods and this time Byron Bay seriously went under along with the other towns.

Don't misunderstand I'm not complaining, Blue Light Card people kept us safe.

Just making some observations

I don’t think anyone in Byron Bay died as a result of this stuff, but sadly at least 20 people died on the southern side of the border and at least another 20 on the Northern side so plenty of people died almost immediately and as a direct result of the floods both North and South of the NSW/Qld border and of course many more in the days and weeks following which brings me to the main issue.But for the efforts of the Blue Light Card workers and there are far too many to name, but include the SES, CFS, Fires, Ambo’s, Services, Police, and general citizens of course the death toll would have been massively greater.How do we acknowledge these people,

Importantly we say thank you

however thank you doesn’t repair the psychological damage they have suffered or replace the stuff they have lost, significantly many of their homes were flooded as well while they were out helping others.

Immediately after the flooding we provided emergency accommodation and now we are offering the Blue Light Card discounts, not a lot by comparison, just a small acknowledgement from us.
